This is our Story

In the beginning…..

The Jet Steppers Square Dance Club was founded in February of 1973 with Buck Green as the Caller. Buck was asked to head up a one - time dance that was so enthusiastically received that he decided to reform the existing Boeing Square Dance Club into the Jet Steppers!

Buck Green called for 13 years and retired in 1986. Greg Weber, an outstanding young caller from Tacoma, assumed the position for the next ten years and was followed by our current caller, Chuck Martin. Chuck and his wife Lynn are this years reciepent of the Jack Willison award for outstanding and continuious support of Square Dancing and he is  active with and the Past President of the Teachers and Callers Association.

Our club is a member of the Square & Folk Dance Federation of Washington. We are listed as a family club accepting membership of Singles, Teens and Couples. Dancers of all ages from 8 to 80 are welcome.

Membership...

Membership in our club is open to, but not limited to, all Boeing Employees, Vendors and family members. Membership from the general public is accepted on a limited basis. The club offices of President, Vice President and Treasurer, are limited to Boeing Employees. Current membership dues are $30.00 for general membership per person. Retires pay only $15.00 per person. School age children of members are not required to pay membership dues. Badges are extra with a charge of $6.00 per badge. Included with your membership dues is entry to all normal club dances. Special dances require an additional entry fees to help pay for extras. All members are covered with insurance by the Washington State Federation of Square dancers. This covers dancers during dances, as well as to and from dances, in the event of accident or injury.

When and Where...

Our club activities take place at the Boeing Kent Activity Center located at 22649 83rd Ave. So. in Kent, WA. Dances and lessons are held in Building D, Rooms D & E. Our normally scheduled dances are held on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays each month.

The dance season begins in September, with our first dance shortly after Labor Day and continues through May. The dances between September and May begin at 7:30 PM with pre-rounds or a Square Dance workshop. The official dance begins at 8:00 PM and continues until 10:30 PM.

June is usually a down month as we get ready for summer, with only an occasional exhibition dance. During July and August we also take it easy and hold only two dances, on the third Saturday of each month. This gives our families time for vacations and such. The summer dances are "come as you are" with no special attire necessary. To further enjoy our summers, we usually start these summer dances at 6:30 PM with a BBQ or some other potluck meal before starting the dancing around 7:30 PM.

Square Dance Lessons

Beginning Mainstream lessons are offered by the Jet Steppers beginning in September after Labor Day. This year the lessons will begin on September 13th, at the Kent Boeing Activity Center, located at 22649 83rd Ave. So. in Kent. Lessons will be conducted in Building D, Room E, from 7:00PM to 9:00PM.

The cost of lessons is very minimal. The first two weeks are free and all follow-on lessons are only $3.00 per person. Lessons are open to all who want to come, over the age of 8. We ask that students must be able participate and stay focused on the lessons. However please keep in mind, the intent of square dancing is to have fun. If you do not have a partner, please come and join us anyway. We will have both male and female experienced dancers present to help out. For the newcomers, these experienced dancers are called "Angels". As we progress with lessons, the students will be invited to join some student level club activities. We will also take students on student level caravans, visiting other clubs and experiencing different callers.

Lessons will continue each Thursday night through April. Lessons will be canceled for the major holidays. We may also be required to cancel do to weather condition, or other events beyond our control. We maintain a phone list of students and members will be notified in the event of a cancellation.

Round Dance Lessons

Round Dance Lessons will be conducted at the same location on Tuesday evenings. Lessons will start at 7:30 PM.  Lessons at this time are Phase I & 2, for the new dancers.  Again the cost is $3.00 per person. The Round Dance instructor is Linda Nold.

Why should I Square Dance?

Square Dancing is a good, wholesome, family activity.

Square Dancing is also an excellent way to make friends and meet new people.

Exercise is another benefit of square dancing. The Square Dance calls and movements are as good as any aerobic exercise. Just think, you can tone your muscles while you’re having fun.

Square dances are held year round - inside and out, so it is always easy to find one to attend.

Square dancing is very reasonable. Dance admission usually runs from $3.00 to $5.00 per person and it's hard to beat that price for an evening of entertainment! You can also find free dances as well.

There are local and national publications to help locate clubs and dances.

Square dancing has deep roots in our country. Many call it America’s Folk Dance.

Square Dancing is the Washington State Dance.

As you travel around the country and the world you will always find square dances and all dances are called in English all over the world.

Modern Square Dancing is danced to some of today's most popular songs. It is as old as yesterday and as new as tomorrow, ever changing, yet always fun.

It is a hobby developed to entertain people of all ages who wish to have fun, even if you have two left feet.

Square Dancing can be learned by anyone.

It has been said that Square Dancing can add years to your life.
